BERMONDSEY SERIES 2000-02
This series of paintings started in the winter of 2000 and continued to the summer of 2002. The works are the first in a larger series of salt paintings made over a six-year period. All the paintings were made using the same approach. Essentially they represent metamorphosis, within the rolling cycle of birth and death. The works express the need to be in the present moment, by the fact that they themselves are in a constant state of evolution.
The ephemeral nature of the work points towards the world we live in and the lives we lead and comments directly on the decisions we make daily. The repetition of the image highlights the differences we find visually around us, seemingly similar they represent the different directions growth can take.
The works are physically made from a super saturated salt solution that is combined with pigments. Over different time and temperature settings, the water dries out from the work and in so doing the work transforms from a wet molecular state into a hard crystalline state. The paintings will continue to transform subject to water and light levels in the environments they are placed.
