R.S. PORTRAIT 2008

The R.S. portrait is a commission made from salt and the blood of the sitter. It is also the starting block and enabler of the series 'Blood of an Englishman'. Originally the work began in the USA and then travelled on to be painted in the UK. The whole period that the work was developed up to being completed took over two years. As with the other pieces in this series this work is made from a super saturated salt solution and combined with human blood. As the paintings dry they encase within the salt crystalline surface the blood and genetic history of the person. In an arcing curve the works go from a radical change to a slow and progressive change in colour, starting from a dazzling brilliant scarlet red when the blood is still alive and wet, to deep crushed reds, blues and blacks as it dries out and mixes with the air over years.
