THE BUTTERFLY COLLECTOR 2000-05
The sculptures in this series are made up of 3 dimensional armatures of neon glass tubes, where for 5 years a salt crystalline body has been grown over the top of the glass. The forms are approximations of heads and hearts that are electrified to pulsate with light from within their structure.
The thick body of salt around the glass tube acts as an insulator, so whenever the electricity is switched on, it over heats the glass to a higher than normal operating temperature. This action of switching on accelerates the lifespan, so ultimately if and when the work is kept on long enough, it will destroy itself. This series of work was made shortly after the death of my father, and are devises to aid seeing the intense beauty of life, while forcing awareness of its ultimate transience.
